It’s inevitable — October is just around the corner. But there are lots of reasons to love this cozy season. We’re looking forward to the changing colours of the trees and crisp walks bundled up in warm sweaters.

Take the time to adjust your home for the shift in climate. There’s lots you can do to create a more comfortable environment for fall.

OUTDOOR SPACE

Clean and cover your outdoor furniture to protect it from rain and snow — an assortment of covers are sold at Canadian Tire. If you have the space, store outdoor cushions in your garage. For those beautifully clear fall nights, when you want to sit outdoors with a hot drink, make sure there’s a chair or two that can easily be uncovered.

All those plants you nurtured through spring and summer will need to either come indoors, hit the organics bin, or get protected. Some perennials can be left outdoors. Read this article on how to protect them. If you plant yearly, clean out your pots so they’re ready for next spring’s plantings. Some of your herbs and houseplants that enjoyed the summer outdoors can be acclimatized for indoor living — but be sure you do it correctly.

INDOOR SPACE

Take your blankets and throws out of your closets and spread them at the foot of your bed or fold them across a corner of your couch. Place candles on shelves or side tables. Arrange decorative pinecones or eucalyptus. And find other décor items that exude warmth.

Drag those sweaters, scarves, and toques out of storage and put away your summer clothes until next year. Make sure your warm-weather clothes are clean before you put them in plastic bins or suitcases. Here are some tips on how to prepare your wardrobe for hibernation.

Lastly, but so important, put a pair of slippers beside your bed and ensure your pantry is stocked with tea and hot chocolate.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

It’s a great time to do a little rearranging in your garage or storage spaces. Unearth your winter gear and replace it with summer accessories, like beach toys and camping supplies. When the mountains get their first big snowfall, you’ll want your skis or snowboard on hand.

Now is also ideal to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors — make sure the batteries are still charged and ready for a new season.

Enjoy Autumn!
