With there still being some travel uncertainty and restrictions, we have had the opportunity to spend more time exploring our province. What a treat. Traversing the forests, mountains, valleys, ocean, lakes, and towns in our backyard is a stunning alternative to getting on an airplane.

Beyond the obvious places like Whistler, Kelowna, and Tofino, we’ve come up with a handful of destinations you can road trip to for a few days of adventure or relaxation.

Courtenay / Comox:

Skip over to Vancouver Island to the Comox Valley, just over an hour’s drive north from Nanaimo. Take the scenic coastal route for sweeping views of the Strait of Georgia or drive the main highway for a direct route to your destination. Feast on fresh Italian food at Il Falcone, search for fossils on the Trent River, or wander the rugged shorelines.

Pemberton:

Another beautiful spot for tasty local fare, Pemberton is worth the extra 30-minute drive past Whistler — until the 1960s the town was only reachable by train. Find yourself a cozy lodge surrounded by trees, go for an adventurous horse ride along the many forest trails, and when the snow falls, journey into the valley for some cross-country skiing.

Deep Cove:

Known more as a day trip, Deep Cove is a relaxing weekend escape if you live in an urban area. And it’s located in the Lower Mainland. Hop onto Airbnb to find a room or home that feels like a vacation far from reality. Spend your days gliding up Indian Arm or hiking Quarry Rock, and when night falls, settle into a craft beer at Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers. And don’t forget morning doughnuts at Honey’s.

Sunshine Coast:

Throw your gear in the car for a seaside getaway that’s only a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay. Pick one of the coastal towns as a basecamp — Robert’s Creek, Halfmoon Bay, Gibsons, or another. Comb the beaches for shells with your kids, indulge in oysters at Smitty’s Oyster House, or hit the mountain bike trails. There are lots of ways to unwind.
