We’re pretty lucky to call Canada home. That’s reason enough to celebrate Canada Day this weekend with great fanfare. No matter where you live in Metro Vancouver, you’ll find people revelling – at either community events or in their own backyards.

Here are a few events on our radar:

Canada Place: This is the obvious celebration – and Western Canada’s premier spot for the day and night. Step into the crowds for music, food trucks, ceremonies, and nighttime fireworks.

Surrey Canada Day: While Canada Place may be the longest standing, Surrey Canada Day is Western Canada’s biggest celebration. Held at Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre, the free festival starts at 10am and continues into the night with a fireworks show at 10:30pm. Serena Ryder will headline the festival, with lots of other musicians performing throughout the day. There are also food trucks, amusement rides, and lots more activities for the whole family.

Port Moody Golden Spike Days: This fun community event in Rocky Point Park is happening all weekend long, from Friday to Monday. Music, food trucks, bubble ball, and a car show will be on site. You can even take a boat ride up Indian Arm.

Steveston Salmon Festival: Love salmon? This is the perfect place for you on Canada Day. Head down to the Richmond shoreline to begin the day with a pancake breakfast and parade. Stay for the famous salmon barbecue, where wild salmon are grilled over open fire pits. Go early – the barbecue sells out every year.

Dominion Day: Go back in time and celebrate Canada Day the old-fashioned way at Historic Stewart Farm. Enjoy heritage demonstrations, performances, and games from another era.

Find even more celebrations at The Georgia Straight.

If you’re planning on hosting your own festivities at home, try out one of these summer cocktails, or serve something delicious to eat, like these dishes.

Happy Canada Day!
