People like to complain about the weather, but there’s a lot to love about Vancouver in the rain. The fresh nature scent in the air. The way the misty clouds cling to the mountains. The sound of drops against your window. We are lucky to call a rainforest home.

On those days when you’d rather not go outside for a shower, there are plenty of things you can accomplish or enjoy in the comfort of your home. Read on for rainy day activities for you and your family.

DIY PROJECTS: This is the perfect time to tackle that Ikea hack you’ve always wanted to complete. Or knit a scarf for your mom. Or build a workbench for your garage. Paint a statement wall forest green. Apply geometric wallpaper in your kid’s room. Revive a vintage dining table. The possibilities are endless. Visit Addicted 2 DIY, Vintage Revivals, or Ikea Hackers for more ideas.

CREATE IN THE KITCHEN: Rather than venture into the rain for a fancy meal, experiment with gourmet dishes in your own kitchen. You could even have your ingredients delivered. Try things you wouldn’t ordinarily cook: vegan treats, French feasts, sushi… The internet is filled with recipes, but to get you started, check out Half Baked Harvest, Pinch of Yum, and Spices in my DNA.

MOVIE TIME: In this era of binge watching, it’s easy to get caught in a cycle of quantity over quality. Spend some rainy days absorbing art that’s off the mainstream radar. Netflix may be your streamer of choice, but Mubi or Sundance Now offer critically-acclaimed international and independent cinema that you may have never heard of.

LISTEN UP: If you haven’t already hopped on board the podcast train, now is the time to do so. True crime, comedy, interviews, news and politics, sports… there’s something for everyone. If you’re new to the medium, start with Serial, This American Life, or My Dad Wrote a Porno.

Instead of lamenting about the rain, enjoy these cozy days at home.
